Although Blair and Sarah strive to create non traditional pottery, they implement traditional techniques to create all of their work by hand. It is very important that all Salty Sea Dog Designs pottery creations are not made by the use of molds, ensuring that each item is unique and one of a kind. The time and love that Blair and Sarah give to each design is reflected in the quality and uniqueness of each creation.
Salty Sea Dog Designs is a true collaboration between Blair and Sarah Dawes. Each piece of pottery takes both partners to create. Sarah throws all of the forms on the potters wheel and Blair hand sculpts all the details. Often times it is Sarah that hand paints all of the creations, but Blair has been known to help out when he’s needed. Although commercial underglazes are used to create the vibrant colours the sturdy clear glaze is painstakingly mixed by Blair and Sarah, ensuring that all functional pieces are food safe, microwave safe and dishwasher safe.
Pottery requires a very long production period in order for any piece to be completed. Not only does the form need to be thrown and sculpted, it needs to be dried slowly to prevent cracks and warping. Salty Sea Dog Designs pottery goes through two kiln firing before they are finished, reaching temperatures as high as 2200F to vitrify the clay and bring out the vibrant colours you see. Any ceramic piece from Salty Sea Dog Designs can take a month or more to create from start to finish.
Blair and Sarah believe that each piece of pottery that leaves their studio should be as unique as the person receiving it. Salty Sea Dog Designs pottery is adopted, not purchased and comes with a certificate of adoption. Blair and Sarah encourage their fans to name their new pottery friend. These unique pieces of art become a member of the family and a special part of the home.
